Reading the evidence codes

q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.

This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.

q3 i1 The study authors reported a statistically significant positive effect on the TERA-3 (effect size 0.32, above the 0.25 substantively-important threshold), but no significant effects on the WJ-III Letter-Word Identification or Spelling subtests, and the print knowledge domain average (effect size 0.21) was neither statistically significant nor substantively important. → print-1

In the PCER Consortium (2008) randomized trial (14 classrooms, 198 children), print knowledge was assessed with the TERA-3, WJ-III Letter-Word Identification, and WJ-III Spelling subtests. Appendix C.2 reports effect sizes of 0.32, 0.11, and 0.20, all p > 0.05 after WWC multiple-comparison correction; the domain average effect size is 0.21.

"The authors reported a statistically significant positive effect of Bright Beginnings on the TERA-3 and no statistically significant effects on the WJ-III Letter-Word Identification subtest or on the WJ-III Spelling subtest."

WWC calculations on the same trial found the TERA-3 effect size of 0.32 met the substantively-important threshold of 0.25, yet the domain mean effect did not, so the WWC characterized the findings as an indeterminate effect and rated the domain no discernible effects.

"the effect size for the TERA-3 (0.32) is large enough to be considered substantively important according to WWC criteria (that is, at least 0.25). However, the mean effect for the print knowledge domain was neither statistically significant nor substantively important."
