Experiment 3 compared gesture enrichment with picture enrichment (words accompanied by pictures) in a within-subjects classroom design with 51 third-graders trained over 5 days. The authors report they "observed similar benefits of gesture and picture enrichment," contrary to their hypothesis based on adult studies.
"Gesture-enriched learning was hypothesized to boost learning outcomes more than picture-enriched learning on the basis of previous findings in adults. Unexpectedly, however, we observed similar benefits of gesture and p icture enrichment on children 's L2 learning."
