Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i3 Mastery aims correlate strongly with autonomous reasons (r = 0.43 pooled; r = 0.60 in unanchored measurement) and weakly with controlled reasons (r = 0.17). → Janke 2024

Meta-analytic pooling of Sommet and Elliot's (2017) three studies, which measured generalized reasons detached from aim items. The pooled "r = 0.60" exceeded the r = 0.43 found in anchored studies, implying roughly 36 percent shared variance between mastery aims and autonomous reasons.
"The mean association between autonomous reasons and mastery aims found in their three studies with 1295 participants reached r = 0.60 (95% CI [0.54, 0.66], Q(2) = 6.08, p = 0.048, I2 = 67.61%)."

Random-effects meta-analysis of five anchored goal-complex studies (n = 1510) pooling mastery-aim/controlled-reason correlations. The printed pooled value was "r = 0.17", far below the corresponding autonomous-reason association.
"The mean association between mastery aims and controlled reasons reaches r = 0.17 (95% CI [0.08, 0.27], k = 5, n = 1510, Q(4) = 14.03, p = 0.007, I2 = 72.02%)"
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Achievement Goal Orientation — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
Related Claims¶
- Across goal-complex studies, autonomous reasons are strongly associated with achievement goal aims (pooled r = 0.54) — a broader claim this one bears on
- In studies investigating mastery and performance aims simultaneously, mastery aims show tighter bonds with autonomous than controlled reasons, while performance aims are more equidistant — possibly the same claim (merge candidate)
- Performance aims are ambiguously aligned, tied nearly equally to autonomous and controlled reasons — related
- Autonomous reasons are more prominent than controlled reasons for goal striving regardless of aim type — related
