Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i3 In a single unanchored study, performance goals correlated almost equally with autonomous reasons (r = 0.30) and controlled reasons (r = 0.39), unlike mastery aims in the same dataset (r = 0.62 with autonomous reasons). → Janke 2024

Study 4 of Sommet and Elliot (2017), reviewed here, measured generalized reasons detached from aims in a university sample. Performance goals showed near-equivalent correlations with both reason types, while mastery aims in the same dataset were tightly tied to autonomous reasons (r = 0.62) and weakly to controlled reasons (r = 0.19).
"In contrast, performance goals were almost equally strong tied to autonomous reasons ( r = 0.30, p < 0.001) as to controlled reasons (r = 0.39, p < 0.001)."

Meta-analytic pooling of ten anchored studies (n = 2213) for performance aims and controlled reasons, printed as "r = 0.35", compared with r = 0.17 for mastery aims in the same analysis tradition.
"compared to r = 0.35 (95% CI [0.27, 0.43], k = 10, n = 2213, Q(9) = 44.00, p < 0.001, I2 = 80.03%) for performance aims"
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Achievement Goal Orientation — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
Related Claims¶
- Autonomous reasons are more prominent than controlled reasons for goal striving regardless of aim type — reports the opposite
- Across goal-complex studies, autonomous reasons are strongly associated with achievement goal aims (pooled r = 0.54) — related
- Mastery aims are strongly bound to autonomous reasons and only weakly to controlled reasons — related
- In studies investigating mastery and performance aims simultaneously, mastery aims show tighter bonds with autonomous than controlled reasons, while performance aims are more equidistant — possibly the same claim (merge candidate)
