Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i0 After removing two individuals with very high subtraction retrieval frequencies, the association between phonological awareness and subtraction fact retrieval disappeared (r(23) = .11, p = .61), in line with the control group. → Bert De Smedt 2010

Subgroup correlational analyses of retrieval frequency against phonological composites in the dyslexia-control study. The dyslexia subgroup's trend-level subtraction association (r(25) = .37, p = .07) was driven by two individuals with very high subtraction retrieval frequencies; control subgroup subtraction correlations were near zero (r = .06).
"When these participants were removed, the association between phonological awareness and subtraction fact retrieval entirely disappeared ( r(23) = .11, p = .61), which is in line with the findings from the control group."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Adults use a mix of retrieval and procedural strategies in single-digit arithmetic, with retrieval more frequent in multiplication and procedures more frequent in subtraction
- Adults with developmental dyslexia use arithmetic fact retrieval less frequently than matched controls during single-digit multiplication and subtraction
- Phonological awareness is uniquely associated with multiplication fact retrieval frequency, in both dyslexia and control groups — related
- Phonological short-term memory (nonword repetition) shows a modest unique contribution to multiplication fact performance, while phonological awareness shows no relation — related
