Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i? Participants correctly identified on average 18.53 of 20 moving links (92.65%) and 15.56 of 16 arrangements (97.25%). → Rolf Ploetzner 2021

Pre-study with 33 undergraduate students randomly assigned to distinguish either motions of links or arrangements of joined pairs, presented in quadrants with feedback. Mean correct identifications were 18.53 of 20 (92.65%) for motions and 15.56 of 16 (97.25%) for arrangements; no inferential test or effect size is printed.
"On average, 18.53 moving links (92.65%, SD = 1.18) and 15.56 arrangements of pairs of joined links were identified correctly (97.25%, SD = 0.81). The results demonstrate that the learners were able to sufficiently distinguish between the motions as well as the arrangements they were shown."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Visualization format has a large multivariate and univariate effect on identifying motions and spatial arrangements
- Learners' mechanical ability and spatial ability were not significantly related to identification performance in the main study — related
- Learning from an animation is significantly more successful than learning from static pictures when identifying the specific motions of a gear mechanism's links — related
