q3 i? Scores on Write Letters, Write Name, and Write CVC Words tasks increased significantly across age groups, with 3-year-olds scoring lower than 4- and 5-year-olds and 4-year-olds lower than 5-year-olds. → Puranik 2011

Cross-sectional ANOVA with age group as between-subjects factor across 372 preschoolers (30 three-year-olds, 201 four-year-olds, 141 five-year-olds), with Bonferroni-corrected pairwise contrasts. Table 2 reports F(2,369) = 30.27 for Write Letters, 30.52 for Write Name, and 27.49 for Write CVC Words, all p < .001. The study found "3-year-old children scored significantly lower than did the 5-year-old children on all tasks."
"Overall, 3-year-old children scored significantly lower than did the 5-year-old children on all tasks, and the 3-year-old children scored significantly lower than did the 4-year-old children on the write letters, write name, and spell CVC words tasks."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Age differences on composing tasks (Picture Description, Sentence Retell) were not significant, unlike letter, name, and spelling tasks — related
- The first letter of the child's name was the only letter-level factor consistently associated with correct letter writing — related
- Children's name writing knowledge is more advanced than their other writing skills, with substantial letter knowledge of their own names by age 3-4 — related
- Children's writing proficiency is task dependent: children use more advanced features on easier tasks and regress to basic features on harder tasks — related
- Most variance in preschoolers' letter-writing skills is due to differences between students rather than between letters — related
- Preschool emergent writing skills are best described by three correlated but distinct factors: Conceptual Knowledge, Procedural Knowledge, and Generative Knowledge — related
- Vowels were easier for 3- and 4-year-olds to write than CV letters — related
- Use of consonantal context in vowel spelling develops gradually, emerging around age 8 and peaking around age 11 — related
- Prephonological spellers produce letter strings that statistically resemble the writing of their language rather than random strings — related
- Older preschoolers outperformed younger preschoolers on most writing measures but not on the generative composing tasks — related
- The three emergent writing factors show distinct patterns of relations to general cognitive, language, and emergent literacy measures — related
- Writing features develop sequentially: universal features (linearity, segmentation, simple units) are acquired before language-specific features — related
- Prephonological spellers do not show the syllable-length signature predicted by the hypothesized syllabic stage — related
- Spelling accuracy increases across Nunes et al. stages, with main steps from stage 1 to 2 and stage 3 to 5 — related
