Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i2 University students who read a self-control text with thematically related decorative pictures answered significantly more knowledge items correctly than students who read the text without pictures, controlling for prior knowledge. → Demian Scherer 2023

q3 · i2 · causal · r2
Randomized two-condition experiment in teacher education seminars (n = 36 with pictures, n = 35 without). ANCOVA on percentage of correct knowledge responses showed the pictures condition scored "significantly more correct answers", ηp2 = .075; the effect held in a sensitivity analysis with continuous prior knowledge covariate.
"An ANCOVA with the factor presence vs. absence of related decorative pictures and prior knowledge as a covariate revealed that participants in the condition with related decorative pictures gave significantly more correct answers (M = 83.40, SD = 11.90) compared to the control condition (M = 77.40, SD = 13.62), F(1, 68) = 5.51, p = .022, ηp2 =.075."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Related decorative pictures do not increase triggered or maintained situational interest; in Experiment 2 they reduced maintained interest — related
- Related decorative pictures improve metacognitive monitoring accuracy for knowledge items in eighth-graders (Experiment 2), but not for transfer items — related
- Related decorative pictures do not enhance transfer performance in either experiment (null results for correctness and metacognitive monitoring) — related
