Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i2 In adult CI users, the number of items answered correctly on the 48-item RPM significantly correlated with sentence recognition measures (r = .35 to .47). → Mattingly Jameson K MD 2018

Bivariate Pearson correlation analysis in 39 post-lingually deafened adults with CIs, reported in Results (Table 3). RPM items correct correlated with Harvard Standard sentences (% words correct r = .35; whole sentences r = .46) and PRESTO sentences (% words r = .41; whole sentences r = .47), i.e., "positively correlated with speech recognition measures."
"In both groups of participants, RPM scores (items correct) were positively correlated with speech recognition measures."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- An abbreviated 12-item RPM subset predicts sentence recognition in CI users with comparable validity to the full 48-item test — a narrower finding that bears on this claim
- CI users answered fewer RPM items correctly than normal-hearing controls, though both groups attempted similar numbers of items — related
- Demographic and audiologic factors (age, duration of hearing loss, age at onset, residual hearing) were not significantly correlated with speech recognition in CI users — related
- Nonverbal reasoning scores also correlate with degraded (noise-vocoded) sentence recognition in age-matched normal-hearing listeners — related
- The 12-item RPM subset similarly predicts degraded sentence recognition in normal-hearing controls, replicating the CI finding — related
