Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i2 In normal-hearing controls listening to 8-channel noise-vocoded speech, RPM scores correlated with sentence recognition (r = .36 to .57). → Mattingly Jameson K MD 2018

Correlational analysis in 43 age-matched normal-hearing controls who listened to 8-channel noise-vocoded sentences simulating the degraded CI signal (Table 3). Correlations ranged from r = .36 (PRESTO % words) to r = .57 (Harvard % words), described as "significantly correlated with sentence recognition."
"The overall number of items answered correctly on the 48-item RPM significantly correlated with sentence recognition in CI users (r = 0.35 – 0.47) and NH controls (r = 0.36 – 0.57)."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- An abbreviated 12-item RPM subset predicts sentence recognition in CI users with comparable validity to the full 48-item test — related
- CI users answered fewer RPM items correctly than normal-hearing controls, though both groups attempted similar numbers of items — related
- Demographic and audiologic factors (age, duration of hearing loss, age at onset, residual hearing) were not significantly correlated with speech recognition in CI users — related
- Nonverbal reasoning (RPM) scores are positively correlated with sentence recognition in post-lingually deafened adult cochlear implant users — related
- The 12-item RPM subset similarly predicts degraded sentence recognition in normal-hearing controls, replicating the CI finding — a narrower finding that bears on this claim
