Research depth taxonomy: seven research-process elements with Milestones 1-4, at least one at Milestone 2 for high impact¶
Element · All elements
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The research depth layer includes each step of the research process as an element with its own Milestones 1-4: literature review, formulating question, research design, data collection, data evaluation/analysis, interpretation of data/drawing conclusions, and reporting out. Milestones indicate increased expectations for students, deeper involvement in the process, and a more engaging experience, often based on student skill level and type of research experience. The authors state that "for the research depth to be considered high impact, t he design of the experience should include at least one of the research depth elements at a minimum of Milestone 2."
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- At least one research depth element at a minimum of Milestone 2; the mentor decides how many depth elements to include and at what milestone level based on student skill level, mode of experience, and available resources
Constraints¶
- Not all research experiences are created equal; some may require a student to conduct the entire research process while others plug students into one or two components of the process
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate students at varying skill levels, from first-year introductory courses to senior capstone projects
Target Learning Goals¶
- deeper involvement in the research process and its component skills
