Future active-classroom research should use adequately powered, well-randomized trials measuring a wide range of student outcomes¶

Description¶
Based on its assessment of the evidence base, the review concludes that future research is needed to ensure studies are "adequately powered, employ appropriate methods of randomization, and measure a wide range of important student outcomes across the full spectrum of the school-age". It notes cluster RCTs are the ideal design because they avoid contamination, but few trials powered samples for within-cluster variance, and ICC values were rarely reported. It also calls for translational research to minimize time barriers to lesson planning and for mechanistic evidence on optimal dose, intensity, and duration.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Adequate statistical power accounting for within-cluster variance; appropriate randomization and reporting of ICC values
Constraints¶
- The review could not comment on long-term impacts because outcomes were analysed only immediately after intervention completion
Target Learners¶
- school-aged children ages 3 to 18, including currently unstudied high-school populations
Target Learning Goals¶
- academic performance, cognitive abilities, attention, enjoyment, and additional outcomes such as fatigue and injury
Claims¶
Related Strategies¶
- Future physical activity intervention studies should report activity intensity and include physical fitness measures as objective indicators
- Future active-learning research should use randomised controlled designs with larger samples and standardised outcome measures
- Future flipped-classroom research should be well-designed, sufficiently powered RCTs with low risk of bias reported per CONSORT
- Future simulation research should use rigorous designs, standardized tools, and transparent reporting
- Future HFS trials for practising nurses need larger samples, rigorous randomised design and standardised, fully reported measures
- Future research should include long-term RCTs with adequate sample sizes, standardized outcome measures, and cost-effectiveness analyses
- Future classroom-based physical activity studies should match outcome measures to intervention period and use objective physical activity measures
