Use Five Key Questions to stress-test proposed micro-credential competencies before drafting¶

Description¶
Before drafting, issuing organizations respond to Digital Promise's "Five Key Questions for Identifying and Developing Educator Micro-credentials," which ask what discrete skill educators will demonstrate, whether it is demonstrable through artifacts scored against a rubric, what research supports it, what evidence indicates successful demonstration, and what related competencies connect. The paper says this vision "increases the likelihood that the published micro-credentials meet the rigorous and consistent standards of clarity and quality."
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Issuers engage in training and an ongoing consulting relationship with Digital Promise to shape the concept and prepare for publication
Constraints¶
- Question four serves as a litmus test for competency granularity, screening out competencies too big or too small
Target Learners¶
- issuing organizations developing educator micro-credentials
Target Learning Goals¶
- defining demonstrable, research-aligned educator competencies
Related Strategies¶
- Align micro-credential offerings and recognition with student and educator performance standards
- Validate micro-credentials through construct validity review plus interrater reliability checks on the first 50 submissions
- Share a full support plan—vision, choices, incentives, supports, and timeline—before micro-credential implementation
- Use the Good, Better, Best Fit model to guide educators' selection of micro-credentials
- Adapt an existing micro-credential for a new context through translation, local assessor training, professional development, and coaching
