Description¶
This fifth IMPROV action area builds capacity for end-user design. The article explains that "Meta-design means designing for design," providing users with "opportunities, tools, and social structures to extend the system to fit their needs" rather than closed systems. It includes historicity support giving users access to earlier design decisions, exploration support for trying technology configurations, and capacity building that ensures users understand the theoretical work undergirding design decisions.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Capacity building must go beyond knowledge of technological features to include understanding the theoretical work undergirding design decisions, activating user expertise, and empowering users to change the system
Constraints¶
- Support must be designed for infrastructuring after a project's official lifespan or funding period, recognizing the spatial and temporal scale of activities
Target Learners¶
- educators
- teachers
Target Learning Goals¶
- empowering practitioners to creatively design or redesign systems in their local practice
Related Strategies¶
- Identify key social actors and expand design areas to include design in-use by practitioners
- Rally for coherence-making and infrastructure remaking activities between innovation and practice
- Evaluate infrastructures continually using process-tracking methods such as ethnography and embedded sensors
- Make visible the installed base of existing infrastructures and discern its relationship with the innovation
- Plan for possible points of infrastructuring, including breakdowns and anticipation work
