Description¶
Before exams, instructors should present academic integrity reminders covering the university's integrity policies, the negative consequences of cheating, and a real case of academic dishonesty and its punishment. The mini-meta-analysis found reminders significantly reduced cheating rates with very strong Bayes evidence (BF10 = 37.94), and the effect did not differ between unproctored and proctored formats. The reminders were printed on the exam booklet cover page in Studies 3 and 4, modeled on content from prior studies.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Reminders should reiterate academic integrity policies, negative consequences of cheating, and an actual case of academic dishonesty with its punishment
Constraints¶
- Reminders reduced cheating rate but had no significant effect on cheating extent once students decided to cheat
Target Learners¶
- university students
Target Learning Goals¶
- upholding academic integrity and assessment validity in course exams
Claims¶
- Pre-exam academic integrity reminders significantly reduce cheating rates relative to no reminders, equally for both exam formats [+M]
- With academic integrity reminders present, the exam-format effect on cheating rate disappears (Study 3 null) [~M]
- Study 4 replicated lower cheating rates in unproctored exams with reminders present, though with anecdotal Bayes evidence [+M]
