Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
Based on survey findings, the report recommends that principals and district administrators monitor coach workload and protect coach time; that coaches spend at least 30 minutes with teachers at biweekly intervals; that coaching time focus on supporting teachers' use of technology with students; that teachers be included more often in coach evaluation to make coaching more personalized; and that longer-term, dedicated federal and state funding investments sustain coaching programs.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Coaches need protected time, professional development support, and sustainable multi-year funding to implement as described
Constraints¶
- The time and frequency recommendation is attributed to Dynamic Learning Project research (Bakhshaei, Hardy, Ravitz, & Seylar, 2019) rather than tested in this survey
Target Learners¶
- School principals, district administrators, and instructional coaches in K-12 schools
Target Learning Goals¶
- Improving the value and impact of instructional coaching for teacher growth
Affordances¶
Related Strategies¶
- Protect coaches' time so the majority is spent directly with teachers
- School and district leaders' recommendations for implementing effective classroom coaching programs
- Meet consistently with the coach throughout the school year in dedicated one-on-one time
- Design coaching programs as a systemic collective enterprise with shared vision, recruited and developed coaches, and continuous evaluation
- Strengthen administrator induction by integrating it into a continuum of supports, mandating coach training and consistent coaching intervals, building program–district partnerships, and using CalAPA results to inform coaching
