Description¶
The authors recommend VR as a research strategy because it combines ecological interactivity with experimental control: "VR environments offer substantial advantages in terms of rigorous experimental control and the ability to systematically and with precision manipulate boundary conditions". VR overcomes laboratory limitations such as lack of agency and embodiment and passive participant behavior. The article's paradigm emphasized high levels of interaction with both the virtual environment and characters.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- VR equipment and custom-built environments compatible with the research question
- Task designs that demand active engagement from participants with both tasks and environments
Constraints¶
- Fully capturing real-world dynamics remains challenging in current VR environments, which often rely on simplified settings and artificial characters
Target Learners¶
- adult participants in cognitive psychology experiments
Target Learning Goals¶
- studying episodic memory formation and event segmentation under interactive, naturalistic conditions
Claims¶
- Temporal order memory accuracy and confidence both increased significantly with block order across the six-block VR experiment [+W]
- Confidence in correct memory responses is higher when both spatial and mission boundaries are not crossed, with an interaction between the two boundary types [+W]
- With inter-object intervals held comparable, memory accuracy is significantly higher for the within-Mission/across-Spatial level than for the across-Mission/within-Spatial level [+W]
- Crossing a conceptual (mission) boundary significantly impairs the accuracy of temporal order memory in an interactive VR episodic memory task [+W]
- Crossing a spatial boundary shows no significant effect on temporal order memory accuracy, and no significant mission-by-spatial interaction, in the VR salesperson task [+W]
Related Strategies¶
- Use immersive VR with virtual agents and eye-tracking to isolate and manipulate specific social factors (gaze, feedback, embodiment, multimodality) in L2 learning experiments
- Build research programs combining studies optimized for internal validity with studies optimized for ecological validity
