Description¶
The guide presents a basic career pathway model as a structural framework for organizing connected education and training programs. In this model, "A basic career pathway model includes multiple entry points to facilitate access to training in occupational skills and knowledge valued by employers and stackable credentials that match labor market demand." Multiple exit points aligned with employment opportunities let participants access employment at different stages of the career ladder, and individuals may enter and exit at multiple points as they advance. Bridge programs for basic skills are not always positioned at the beginning of a pathway.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Clearly defined entry and exit points
- Stackable credentials matching labor market demand
Constraints¶
- Not all students start at the first level; pathways are often not linear because individual needs and circumstances vary
Target Learners¶
- Community college students, including those needing basic skills preparation
Target Learning Objectives¶
- Progression toward credentials and family-sustaining employment
Claims¶
- Intentionally designed career pathways with multiple entry and exit points and stackable credentials receive moderate evidence of improving student outcomes [+M]
- The five career pathways recommendations are supported by 21 studies with participant samples ranging from 124 to 42,984 students [+W]
Related Theories¶
- Stackable Credentials Along Pathways
