Technology-as-amplifier: learning technology intensifies and scales the impacts of design tradeoffs in either direction¶
Theory · All theories
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The report's central framing metaphor holds that technology amplifies whatever design choices surround it: "learning technology can take an aspect of a learning process and emphasize it, refine it, intensify it, and scale it widely. This can be good or bad; undesirable or desirable effects on learning can scale with equal ease." Because integration is accelerating, the report argues the amplifier knob is going from low to high, so suboptimal choices can quickly have widespread effects, including magnifying learning loss for some students. This motivates urgent planning for equitable, ethical, effective AI.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Design teams explicitly analyze tradeoffs (e.g., more matched practice time versus less social-skill learning) before scaling technology
Constraints¶
- The metaphor is an argumentative framing, not an empirically tested model
Target Learners¶
- All learners affected by scaled learning technologies
Target Learning Objectives¶
- Anticipating and mitigating inequitable impacts of learning technology design decisions
