Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i? Moment-by-moment learning curves coded from 265 graphs showed four forms: immediate peak (45%), immediate drop (25%), separated multiple spikes (17%), and close multiple spikes (13%). → Inge Molenaar 2021

Coding study of 265 moment-by-moment learning curve graphs from 92 students' ALT log data, coded by two trained coders with kappa 0.74. The article reports "Immediate peak were most frequent with 118 curves (45%)"; separated multiple spikes occurred 46 times (17%) and close multiple spikes 35 times (13%), while single spike curves did not occur.
"We found four visual patterns of learning curves, shown in Fig. 4. Immediate peak were most frequent with 118 curves (45%), followed by immediate drop (occurred 66 times, 25%)."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Close multiple spikes suggest students unable to regulate accuracy on their own learned better once the ALT took over part of the regulation. — related
- The form of moment-by-moment learning curves depends on problem difficulty: immediate drops concentrate on easy problems, while spike forms become more frequent as difficulty increases. — related
- Students learned significantly over the four lessons, and learning outcomes differed by curve form: immediate drop reflected high prior knowledge with low gain, while immediate peak showed the highest gain. — related
- Accuracy differs significantly across moment-by-moment learning curve forms, with immediate drop highest and a downward trend in attempt accuracy as curve complexity increases. — related
- Effort (unique problems and problem-solving attempts) does not differ between moment-by-moment learning curve forms. — related
- Transfer score was significantly predicted by the count of moment-by-moment learning curve forms, with separated multiple spikes negatively impacting transfer. — related
