Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i1 In an online interaction with a fictitious disagreeing partner, performance-approach goals predicted competitive regulation only when the partner was presented as more competent (β = .49, p < .001, partial η² = .09), not when equally competent; the interaction effect was small (partial η² = .03). → Sommet 2015
q3 i3 With a more-competent partner, higher performance-approach goals predicted higher competitive regulation; with an equally competent partner the relationship was not observed. → Sommet 2015

q3 · i1 · causal · r2
Internet study with 139 university students who believed they interacted with a disagreeing partner presented as a bachelor (same-competence) or PhD (superior-competence) student. Regression showed the predicted interaction, β = .19, F(1, 129) = 4.38, p < .04, partial η² = .03 (small effect), with the simple slope in the superior-competence condition at partial η² = .09.
"When the partner was presented as being more competent, the higher the performance-approach goals, the higher the competitive regulation, /H9252/H11005.49, F(1, 129) /H1100512.42, p /H11021.001, /H9257p2 /H11005.09"
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Achievement Goal Orientation — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes

- Performance goals regulate conflict with more-competent others toward competitive (approach) or protective (avoidance) interpersonal behavior — a broader claim this one bears on
- Manipulated performance-approach (vs. avoidance) goals increase preference for a self-confirmatory model over a compliant one with a more-competent partner (Study 2) — related
- Performance-approach goals positively predict competitive regulation and performance-avoidance goals positively predict protective regulation overall (Studies 1 and 3) — related
- Manipulated performance-approach (vs. avoidance) goals increase preference for a self-confirmatory model over a compliant one with a more-competent partner (Study 2) — related
