Description¶
The 4P4CT (Four Pedagogies for CT) framework is a conceptual framework for teaching CT to all students in all subject matters, rooted in constructivism and constructionism. The course implementing it "implements four learner-centered pedagogies: active learning, project-based learning, product-based learning, and learning in context". Product-based learning is realized as developing a simulation of a computational process in any field of knowledge of the student's choice, and context-based learning holds that knowledge must be built within a relevant domain rather than as theory alone.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A supportive learning environment that maintains motivation, and guided, consistent reflection on learners' personal understanding of CT concepts
Constraints¶
- The framework was examined in an academic CT course for prospective teachers; its effectiveness for K–12 pupils is left to future research
Target Learners¶
- prospective teachers of all disciplines and age groups, and school pupils generally
Target Learning Objectives¶
- acquiring and applying computational thinking skills across all knowledge domains
Claims¶
- Ct Process Scripts Feasible Across Fields [+M]
- Exploration simulations increased with teaching age level and were concentrated in secondary science subjects [+W]
- Inquiry-based exploration simulations were significantly more likely in exact and life sciences than humanities and social sciences [+W]
- Most prospective teachers produced dynamic simulations rather than tutoring scripts, with 46% adding inquiry-oriented exploration [+W]
Related Theories¶
- Taxonomy of pedagogical approaches in scripts of computational processes: tutoring vs. simulation, each with two sub-categories
- Distinguishing computing, computer science, computational thinking, and programming
- Three-circle framework for computational thinking integration: skills, practices, and inclusive pedagogies
- Three powerful ways of using computers that integrate with academic subject matter: data work, automation, and modeling systems
Examples¶
- Incorporate CT skills into all teacher preparation programs, for all subject matters, with iterative guidance for non-STEM teachers
- Integrate computational thinking into PreK-8 core subject matter rather than relying on stand-alone clubs and classes
