Description¶
The presentation proposes a framework for intelligence augmentation (IA) in collaborative learning, built on four verbs that extend the individualized EdTech triad of assess, assign, and adapt: "Automate (complexity of organizing social, contextual learning)", "Add awareness (of what is occurring in social learning)", "Assist (facilitate engagement in social learning behaviors)", and "Augment (social intelligence about group learning in a context)". It positions these as the design agenda for AI that augments the social intelligence of teachers and students rather than personalizing to one learner at a time.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- AI for learning should be rethought to augment the social intelligence of teachers and students rather than only individual learners
Constraints¶
- The presentation states issues of ethics and equity are paramount as this agenda is explored, though it does not elaborate them
Target Learners¶
- K-12 students in collaborative classrooms
Target Learning Objectives¶
- collaborative learning
- complex intellectual challenges
- discourse and argumentation
- project-based group work
Claims¶
- Collaborative Situations Often Fail Productive [+W]
- Edtech Ai Messaging Individual Vs Social Curricula [+W]
- Well-structured collaborative learning is extremely effective, especially for learning concepts and complex problem solving [+W]
Related Theories¶

- Five new design concepts for AI in learning: orchestrating, augmenting, expanding natural interactions, broadening competencies, and revealing connections
