Description¶
The article adopts Smith et al.'s (2011) framework, which classifies privacy definitions into value-based (privacy as a right or commodity) and cognate-based (privacy as a state or control) approaches. The authors chose it because it "emanates from the information systems field" and thoroughly considers technology and human-technology relations. It serves as the coding scheme for the scoping review, with added categories for other definitions and no definition.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Articles must be coded against the framework's key phrases (e.g., right to be left alone, limited access, control of transactions) by independent coders with verified agreement
Constraints¶
- The framework is used as a starting point; an "other definitions" category was added for conceptualizations that did not fit it
Target Learners¶
- learning analytics researchers and practitioners
Target Learning Objectives¶
- conceptual clarity about privacy in learning analytics
Claims¶
Related Theories¶
- Privacy as a plural, context-dependent concept operationalized as restriction of access to personal information
- Emerging LA-specific privacy conceptualizations: contextual integrity and intellectual privacy
