Description

A CSCL environment for gene technology consisting of computer-based 3D models (a research laboratory and a molecular level of the cells where students pick up amino acids and place them in a chain) plus a website presenting the problems and the codontable. "The 3D model was organised for distributed settings, with the participants connected in a local area network (LAN) and supplied with a telecommunication system that allowed them to communicate orally during the whole session." Students and teacher, each in a separate room, shared the 3D models and website as shared objects and were represented by avatars.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A local area network connecting all participants
  • A real-time telecommunication system for oral communication
  • Basic teacher training using the tools ahead of the educational setting

Constraints

  • The 3D model comes with taxations, including weaknesses concerning the conceptual representations and a storyline that partly steals focus from the disciplinary problem

Target Learners

  • ninth-grade secondary school students

Learning Goals

  • reading DNA sequences with a codontable
  • relating codons to amino acids
  • building a model of the insulin-protein
