Description¶
The 7E learning cycle is a constructivist, inquiry-based instructional model with seven phases: elicit, engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate, and extend. The article describes it as helping "make for an effective learning process through seven steps," beginning by examining learners' prior knowledge before new content and ending with explicit transfer of learning. In the study it was operationalized as a Teachers' Instructional Guide used to teach ionic theory, oxidation-reduction, mole concept, and electrolysis over four weeks.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers must be trained to follow the seven steps within a reasonable timeframe
- Assessment of prior knowledge (eliciting) must not be omitted
Constraints¶
- The article reports it is more complex, somewhat 'alien,' and requires more class-time and teacher expertise than case-based learning
Target Learners¶
- senior secondary school chemistry students
Learning Goals¶
- chemistry conceptual achievement
- transfer of learning
- positive attitude to chemistry
