Description¶
The ability-adjusted jigsaw method unites learning by design, learning together, and inquiry learning. Children of varying ability levels work in heterogeneous design groups on a complex, open-ended problem; each child is responsible for one topic, with topic assignment depending on ability level. Members split into homogeneous expert groups of similar ability who "are responsible for becoming experts about the same topic" via inquiry assignments matched to their level, then return to share and integrate knowledge in the design group. The method is adapted from the original jigsaw procedure of Aronson et al. (1978) and is intended to serve both cognitive and socio-emotional needs of gifted and non-gifted children.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A complex, open-ended design problem requiring knowledge of multiple topics
- Topic assignment matched to children's ability levels
- Homogeneous expert groups with inquiry assignments matched to ability level
Constraints¶
- The article notes elementary school children may experience problems with knowledge sharing and integration, which may be amplified when children differ in knowledge level and pace of learning, hence the worksheet support
Target Learners¶
- Gifted, average-ability, and low-ability children in grades 4 to 6 of primary education
Learning Goals¶
- Science inquiry skills (light and heat, oxygen, water, nutrition)
- Design and justification of a solution to an authentic problem
- Collaborative knowledge sharing across ability levels
Claims¶
- Worksheet Improves Heterogeneous Group Dialogue [+M]
- Prompts Active Effective Inquiry Ability Differences [+M]
