Description¶
The Access classroom combines multimedia-rich facilities (multimedia, computer, CDs, white board, UPS) with activity-based teaching and continuous rather than high-stakes assessment. Teachers "teach English language through; showing movies, role plays, group work, peer work, songs, video and board games etc. which are not common in Pakistani public schools." Teachers and students may rearrange the classroom to their needs, and both are free of pass-fail examination pressure, which the article contrasts with the chalk-and-talk, Grammar Translation Method of public schools.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Modern teaching gadgets (multimedia, computer, CDs, white board, UPS), teachers trained by local and American trainers, and absence of pass-fail examinations with continuous assessment instead
Constraints¶
- The article describes this pattern as operating in the after-school Access setting; these practices are reported as not common in Pakistani public schools
Target Learners¶
- Secondary-age English learners from low socio-economic backgrounds in after-school classes
Learning Goals¶
- Development of English linguistic competence and performance across listening, speaking, reading and writing
