Description

The article proposes a four-stage foreign language speech learning model based on the corrective feedback learning loop (Hattie & Timperley, 2007), comprising "acquisition, correction, reflection, and application." In the acquisition stage, learners receive lectures on pronunciation rules; in the correction stage, the AI tool "French Assistant" provides immediate automated corrective feedback using automatic speech recognition; in the reflection stage, peer assessment is adopted after courses using rubrics covering vowel, consonant, stress, intonation, and fluency; in the output stage, learners complete pronunciation exercises and peer assessment across five learning tasks. The model integrates AI technology with corrective feedback strategies to provide timely, personalized guidance.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • An AI learning app with automatic speech recognition capability (French Assistant) that provides immediate automated corrective feedback on pronunciation

Constraints

  • The study was conducted over only 5 weeks, which the authors note was not enough to form long-term learning habits

Target Learners

  • College students learning foreign language pronunciation

Learning Goals

  • French pronunciation accuracy
  • Self-regulated learning
  • Intrinsic motivation
