Description¶
The article proposes that the methods and techniques used in learning-teaching environments are extensively influential on epistemological beliefs, which are considered an area of individual differences. It argues that through Jigsaw II and animations, students realized that the only source of knowledge is not the teacher or the book, that knowledge can be accessed through various sources, and that the correctness of knowledge is testable. These recognitions made a positive influence on their epistemological beliefs.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Instructional methods that expose students to multiple sources of knowledge beyond teacher and textbook
Constraints¶
- Reading-writing-presentation method did not influence epistemological beliefs, possibly because students had difficulty working in groups and tended to work individually
Target Learners¶
- seventh-grade middle school students
Learning Goals¶
- epistemological beliefs about sources of knowledge and testability of knowledge
