Description¶
A training program comprising "ten 40–50 min small-group sessions over five weeks", delivered by pre-service teachers following a script and piloted with four students from another school. It contained learning activities on difference sets, the Dynamization Strategy, and the Inversion Strategy, moving from verifying and matching statements about given situations to generating different descriptions of given situations. Crucially, "No word problems were solved during the training", meaning students did not encounter word problems in their typical form and were not asked to write equations or calculate; learners instead contrasted and analyzed features of given statements collaboratively, explaining differences and commonalities between statements such as symmetrical relational statements.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Pre-service tutors followed a script outlining content, procedure, and duration of activities as well as wording options for student support; specific care was taken to support learners with low language skills regarding the linguistic challenges of the re-wording approach
Constraints¶
- The training deliberately excluded word problem solving, equation writing, and calculation, so it targets restructuring of situation models only; it was evaluated as a feasibility study with a neutral control group
Target Learners¶
- grade 2 students in German primary schools, grouped in small groups of six per classroom with heterogeneous language skills
Learning Goals¶
- restructuring situation models of additive one-step word problems
- generating and comparing different perspectives on given situations
Claims¶
- Restructuring Training Improves Word Problem Solving [+M]
- Delayed Training Effects Word Problems [+M]
