Description

In the experimental condition the article implemented assessment for learning through a concrete toolkit: "learning portfolios, classroom observations, after class exercises and quizzes, and learning notebooks". Learning notebooks were handed in weekly containing a study summary, a plan for the next week and suggestions to the teacher, and were returned with marking that involved no grades. The instructor recorded progress and problems during observations and communicated with students in time to solve them, with group work particularly encouraged.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Instructor training: the experimental teacher received an intensive five-day training course on assessment-for-learning techniques before implementation

Constraints

  • Some students found the grade-free marking vague and the procedures' many requirements frustrating

Target Learners

  • pre-medical university ESP students

Learning Goals

  • continuous diagnosis of learning problems
  • self-monitoring and responsibility for learning
  • ESP achievement
