Description

The after-school mathematics clubs were designed as alternative learning environments that 'explicitly defined and utilized students' home language, communities, and knowledge as learning resources.' They offered collaborative, project-based activities with cross-generational participants (students, preservice teachers, researchers), and became counter spaces that naturally provoked students to compare, analyze, question, and comment on their mathematics experiences in both settings.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Activities must value and integrate students' language, experiences, and communities; adults often spoke in Spanish and tasks were written in two languages

Constraints

  • Students volunteered to participate; the clubs ran 8 to 12 weeks each school semester, meeting approximately two hours once or twice a week

Target Learners

  • Third- to sixth-grade urban Latina/o students with a range of Spanish and English proficiencies

Learning Goals

  • More advanced mathematics opportunities and practices than students typically received in their regular classes
