Description¶
The study conceptualizes generative AI not as a content-delivery tool but as "a cognitive and instructional partner" that supports teacher learning through contingent prompting, feedback, rehearsal, and guided reflection. Guided by Rhodes' 4P framework (person, process, press, product) and constructivist and socio-constructivist perspectives, the AI responds to teachers' ideas, prompts explanation and revision, simulates student reasoning, and scaffolds reasoning within teachers' zone of proximal development. Teachers experienced the system as a "knowledgeable partner" rather than a static content provider.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Interaction organized around clear pedagogical goals, discipline-specific tasks, and repeated cycles of explanation, feedback, and revision
- Teachers retain interpretive authority and the system's role remains transparent and bounded
Constraints¶
- Open-ended AI coaching may produce generic feedback or overextend beyond teachers' professional judgment
Target Learners¶
- in-service K-6 mathematics teachers in rural and under-resourced districts
Learning Goals¶
- mathematical creativity
- content knowledge for proportional reasoning
- pedagogical content knowledge
