AI-decision checkpoints framework: one explicit AI-adoption decision point per BPM lifecycle phase

Description

The framework uses the BPM lifecycle to structure explicit, phase-related decisions about AI adoption across identification, discovery, analysis, redesign, implementation, and monitoring. At each checkpoint students "identify AI-candidate subprocesses, establishing the baseline, evaluating expected benefits and risks using the analytical instruments of the corresponding lifecycle phase, and documenting a reasoned decision to adopt, adapt, postpone, or reject specific AI components". It decomposes AI adoption from a monolithic yes/no judgment into locally grounded assessments producing a traceable decision trail.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Each checkpoint aligns with one of the six BPM lifecycle phases and uses that phase's analytical instruments

Constraints

  • The framework does not prescribe a correct answer at any checkpoint; it foregrounds reasoning quality
  • individual checkpoints can be weighted or combined without disrupting the logic

Target Learners

  • Master-level Business Information Systems or Computer Science students
  • future process developers

Learning Goals

  • reasoning about AI as a first-class design element of end-to-end processes
  • justifying AI adoption decisions with phase-appropriate evidence
