Description

Anchored discussion is a design for online discussion in which the article under discussion is displayed adjacent to the threaded discussion and messages can be anchored to specific passages of the text. Unlike shared annotation, which starts from personal notes made visible to peers, anchored discussion "starts from the notion of collaborative discussion that is contextualized or 'anchored' within a specific content," displaying "both artifact and discussion in a linked, yet independent manner." The article argues this document-centeredness defines a stronger collaborative context that focuses participants' collaborative intentions and gives messages a stronger frame of reference, reducing the effort needed for grounding and clarification.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • The discussion environment must physically present the text online adjacent to the threaded discussion and allow anchoring messages to specific passages of the text.

Constraints

  • The article notes technical issues with the studied system (such as the placement of certain buttons) that should be resolved in further development.
  • The observed advantages concern the early stages of collaborative literature processing by undergraduates; for more personal and critical discussion among participants with sufficient understanding, the authors suggest traditional forum discussion might be better suited.

Target Learners

  • Undergraduate students processing academic literature in higher education

Learning Goals

  • Collaborative comprehension and processing of academic texts
