Description¶
The article's teaching-learning program operationalizes BBL principles as a recurring lesson pattern: organizing concepts in interrelated networks (the formal/perceptive regulator and concept charts), brainstorming for free idea generation, KWL at the beginning and end of modules, collaborative group work, role playing, debate and discussion, summaries, and review of the previous topic before continuing. It also embeds environmental and emotional conditions: "providing the safe psychological classroom environment through free movement and sitting upon the define of the student as well as allowing drinking water". The pattern was applied across the electrochemical cells and acids-bases units.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Strategies must be harmonized with BBL principles; the article states teaching is more efficient when students "exchange experiences within collaboration groups"
Constraints¶
- Applied only to the topics of electrochemical cells, acids, bases and minerals in the 9th-grade chemistry curriculum
Target Learners¶
- 9th-grade female students in chemistry
Learning Goals¶
- chemistry achievement
- knowledge retention
- student engagement and relaxation
