Description¶
A blended learning package for undergraduate eFAST training consisting of standardised digital preparation (a 31-slide presentation and a 13-min instructional video on Moodle) and, for the intervention group, a handheld ultrasound device for voluntary self-practice. As the article states, "the intervention group additionally had access to a handheld ultrasound device for voluntary practice." Assessment used a standardised eFAST on a high-fidelity simulator scored with a modified OSAUS rubric by a blinded rater.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Enrolment in a clerkship with a standardised course day and simulator-based assessment; devices distributed about eight days before the course with a brief written device guide and email technical support
Constraints¶
- Practice was voluntary and practice minutes were captured only by self-report; equipment differed between handheld self-practice and simulator assessment, which the authors state could have influenced learning transfer and limit generalisability
- Single-centre design with cluster randomisation at the clerkship-group level (2–3 students), which the authors state may limit generalisability
Target Learners¶
- Undergraduate medical students in an anaesthesiology clerkship (9th–10th semester)
Learning Goals¶
- Practical competence in performing a complete eFAST examination, including probe handling, image optimisation, systematic examination sequence, interpretation and verbal documentation of findings
Claims¶
- Handheld Ultrasound Practice Improves Efast Osaus Scores [+M]
- Handheld Practice Shortens Efast Examination Time [+M]
- Handheld Practice Increases Complete Efast Rate [+M]
