Description

The BOLOS Time 2 battery included a 12-week diary study in which participants completed a weekly report of everyday experiences at the end of each week. The diaries included questions related to "everyday memory problems, perceived control, and a range of health and well-being measures." Everyday memory problems were assessed with 11 items reporting how many days (0-7) each problem occurred, summed to a weekly composite ranging from 0 to 77. Weekly perceived control was a single item asking how much participants felt "in control of my life" that week (1-5). Participants completed the paper-and-pencil diary at home and mailed it back within 24 hours.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Participants must complete at least two weeks of diaries with complete Time 1 and Time 2 data for inclusion.

Constraints

  • There was a significant drop-off in reports of memory problems over the 12 weeks, so time was included as a covariate; participant burden may result in a drop-off in reports.

Target Learners

  • Community-residing midlife and older adults

Learning Goals

  • Assessing naturally-occurring everyday memory problems and weekly fluctuations in perceived control
