Description

A 90-minute school-based breast health program consisting of a standardized lecture on breast cancer overview, facts, and American Cancer Society detection recommendations, a video on breast health and breast self-awareness, a BSE demonstration, and a hands-on activity in which "the participants in the treatment classrooms engaged in a hands-on activity with simulated breast models" in small groups of four, practicing BSE and identifying embedded lumps. The comparison classrooms received the same lecture and video plus a Wellness Inventory instead of the hands-on activity.

Design Implications

Context

Target Learners

  • adolescent females ages 15-18 enrolled in health education, health science, and child development classes

Learning Goals

  • breast health knowledge

  • breast self-awareness
