Description

Each Butterfly lesson follows a recurring structure: the excerpt is read aloud by the teacher at the start so pupils gain the gist and context, followed by class discussion in which the teacher picks individuals at random to check understanding and surface misconceptions. Pupils then read a section aloud with mistakes corrected while the teacher revisits spelling, pronunciation and grammatical rules, and the lesson includes a period of writing using new vocabulary, such as dictation or composing sentences. The report notes this overt teaching of the global aspects of a text "sets it apart from many purely phonics schemes".
