Description

The Butterfly reading programme is divided into four classes with entry points determined by reading age, measured by an in-house test of single word reading (Table 2). Reading ages of 6–7 enter Class 1 at Butterfly Book chapters 20–30; 7–8 enter Class 2 at chapter 40; 8–9 enter Class 3 at chapter 52; and pupils above 9, with confirmation from informal assessments, enter Class 4 starting at chapter 1 of the Advanced Butterfly Reader. The exact entry lesson is tailored to each group because starting points vary with pupil needs. In the trial, all pupils except two remained in their starting class; two pupils began in Class 2, found the work very easy, and were moved up to Class 3.
