Description

The article uses the CALLA model (Chamot & O'Malley, 1994) to structure explicit strategy instruction. It was chosen because it "includes three components": study-discipline content, academic language skills, and "explicit scaffolded instruction in language learning strategies". The model rests on the cognitive theory of learning, distinguishing long-term, short-term and working memory, with foreign language learning arising from "strategic behaviour in working memory" (Macaro, 2006). In the study it was implemented through cognitive, metacognitive and memory strategy clusters integrated into regular class work.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Strategy instruction should be explicit and integrated into regular class work activities, per the models the article cites (Chamot, 2004)

Constraints

  • The article reports that when course time is limited and groups are highly heterogeneous, deducting strategy training time from language teaching may hinder effectiveness

Target Learners

  • first-year higher-education students of English for specific purposes in mixed-ability groups

Learning Goals

  • general and discipline-specific English language competence
  • strategic self-regulated language learning
