Description¶
The study reframes the expert/novice binary into an extended learning progression, grouping teachers by "less than five years, five to ten years, and over ten years" of experience and treating experience differences as assets rather than deficits. Grounded in situated perspectives of learning and communities of practice (Lave & Wenger), it holds that teacher learning unfolds in iterative cycles across the career continuum, so a single PD initiative should differentiate support by career stage. The framework motivated the study's second research question on whether perceived growth differs by career experience group.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- PD structures that center the spectrum of teachers' years of experience and specialized contexts
Constraints¶
- The trajectory of teacher learning is recognized as non-linear (Feiman-Nemser)
Target Learners¶
- novice, mid-career, and veteran in-service teachers in specialized contexts such as dual language programs
Learning Goals¶
- differentiated professional growth across career stages
