Description¶
Case-Based Collaborative Learning is described as combining "principles of team-based learning, problem-based learning, and case-based learning through structured preparation and collaborative discussion of clinical cases." The article adopts the model described by Besche et al., which organizes the experience into "three interconnected axes: instructional design, facilitation, and professional transformation," with success depending on coherence between prior preparation, case complexity, teacher mediation, and post-class consolidation. CBCL is presented as reorganizing the roles of student, teacher, and clinical case rather than being merely a technique.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Coherence between prior preparation, appropriate case complexity, teacher mediation, and post-class consolidation
- Adequately prepared facilitators and calibrated case complexity
Constraints¶
- Much of the CBCL literature is limited by single-center experiences, heterogeneous implementation models, and predominance of subjective outcomes
Target Learners¶
- Medical undergraduates
- Residents in radiology and other specialties
Learning Goals¶
- Vertical integration of basic and clinical knowledge
- Engagement and collaborative reasoning
- Self-regulated learning
