Case-based learning pedagogy as case-guided, teacher-prompted learning with a defined implementation sequence¶

Description¶
CBL is a teaching model in which students analyse clinical cases and design treatment strategies while the teacher acts as "a prompter and guide to help students justify their analyses". The article describes an implementation sequence: "establishment of the case → case grouping and analysis → brainstorming → identifying instruction goals → new findings → exchanging results between groups → reaching learning consensus and integrating the consensus into clinical practice". It positions CBL as an element of competency-based education bridging theoretical and practical learning.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- CBL curricula should be based on the sound fundamental knowledge background of the students
Constraints¶
- CBL had not been routine in Chinese dental education; the traditional teacher-centred model, variable school standards, scarce high-quality teaching teams and compressed course duration are stated inhibitory factors
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate and graduate dental students in China
Learning Goals¶
- clinical decision-making and comprehensive patient care
- critical thinking
- integration of preclinical knowledge into clinical application
