Description

The paper proposes what it calls the first choice architecture framework for personalised nudges in learning environments, defining target behaviours (e.g. making comments, noticing important segments, reflecting, linking to personal experience), observed behaviours to correct (e.g. watching without commenting, shallow comments), and nudges as interaction games. It adopts the Münscher et al. nudge taxonomy of decision information, decision structure and decision assistance, and adopts Michie et al.'s behaviour-change principles of capability, motivation and opportunity. The authors state: "Our work is the first attempt to devise choice architecture for personalised nudges to improve learning", using a data-driven, learner-sourcing approach where past learners' behaviour shapes future learning experiences.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A learner model to detect observed behaviours where nudges may be needed, since the framework states that detecting unhelpful situations "requires a learner model"

Constraints

  • The framework is outlined within the context of video-based informal learning and was operationalised in AVW-Space for pitch presentation skills

Target Learners

  • university students (undergraduate, Master and PhD) learning transferable skills from videos

Learning Goals

  • transferable skills such as delivering pitch presentations, including noticing key skill elements and reflecting on personal experience
