Description

A service-learning course at Pace University, offered to undergraduates with no prerequisites, combining a one-hour weekly lecture (robotic principles, creative thinking, problem solving, elementary programming) with a cooperative robotic laboratory. Students work in teams of three or four on weekly robotic challenges, then spend the last four to five sessions mentoring middle-school teams. Table 1 lists four labs: Introduction (gears and gear ratios), Car Racing (chassis, motors, basic programming), Sensors (light and touch sensors), and The Big Race, each designed to be completed within 20 minutes.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Teams of three or four members who divide builder, parts specialist, programmer, and tester roles
  • Labs designed to fit roughly 45-minute school visits, completable within 20 minutes

Constraints

  • Enrollment data showed only 23 women enrolled versus 63 men across the course sections studied

Target Learners

  • undergraduate students
  • sixth-grade middle school students
  • girls in partner elementary and middle schools

Learning Goals

  • problem solving with robotic technology
  • programming concepts
  • cooperative teamwork
  • mentoring younger students
