Description

The study drew on a battery of measures administered across four 2.5-hour testing sessions to 483 twins ages 8 to 16. Working memory was measured with digit span, sentence span, and counting span; inhibition with GDS CPT vigilance and distractibility commission errors and stop-signal reaction time; processing speed with Colorado perceptual speed and ETS identical pictures; naming speed with RAN colors and objects. Reading measures included three word reading tests, four reading comprehension tests, and three listening comprehension tests. Reliability low-bound estimates came from monozygotic twin correlations.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Trained examiners administering measures across multiple testing sessions
  • Standardization or transformation of scores (log transforms for skewed tasks, age regression residuals)

Constraints

  • The sample came from a twin study with oversampling of reading disability and ADHD histories, so the article notes it may not be fully representative of children in Colorado

Target Learners

  • Children and adolescents ages 8 to 16

Learning Goals

  • Assessment of word reading, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, working memory, inhibition, processing speed, and naming speed
