Description

The study implemented co-teaching as a collaborative effort of two or more educators who "share all aspects of teaching, planning, and evaluation", pairing class teachers with special education teachers in the same mathematics classes. Implementation was supported by an initial workshop for each co-teacher pair covering basics, teacher roles, and requirements for successful co-teaching, plus interviews and weekly check-list diaries. Fidelity checks showed co-teaching occurred in 70% of mathematics classes due to teacher absence, with the higher teacher-student ratio maintained via substitutes, and perceived lesson success was high (M = 4.4, SD = 0.69).

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Teachers need a Master's degree in education, at least five years of teaching experience, and voluntary participation; co-teacher pairs should be formed by the teachers themselves to match interests and pedagogical views.

Constraints

  • Co-teaching occurred in only 70% of mathematics classes due to teacher absence; joint planning and assessment were not carried out during substitute-taught lessons, and implementation is described as resource-intensive and far from straightforward.

Target Learners

  • Sixth-grade primary school students (aged 12–13) in mathematics

Learning Goals

  • Mathematics achievement and motivation (self-concept and individual interest)
